Blows Against The Empire!--Paul Kantner

It’s sad to see the death of Paul Kantner, the founder and inner-glue of the very great San Francisco band Jefferson Airplane.

Marty Balin had the greatest voice, by far.  Grace was Grace, with the "electric guitar voice," as Rolling Stone once said.  Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady (later Hot Tuna) were the backbone.  And there was also Spencer Dryden, the drummer.  But the glue was the founder, Kantner.

IMO Kantner's best work was the supercool album Blows Against The Empire (1971), with a lot of other musicians, which was the only rock album ever nominated for a Hugo award (the highest science fiction award).

I also strongly recommend this 30-minute interview with Paul Kantner from 2001:

This is the loss of a real genius, a real champion for social justice, and a great guy.
