Some observations and interpretations of this past election

I made a bunch of observations and interpretations of data here which at first were not organized by theme. I just wrote them randomly as they occurred to me. I, then, more or less organized them by topic.

Narrow

We only won the electoral college because we won Arizona (by 10,000 votes) and Georgia (by 15,000 votes) and Wisconsin (by 20,000 votes) . If we had lost those 3 states, it would have been 269-269, republicans control more state delegations in the US House of Representatives and so they would have won the tiebreaker. So, we only won the electoral college by 45,000 votes and thus, if 22,500 votes had flipped from Biden to Trump, Trump wins a second term. There are an amazing amount of bigoted idiots in this country.  I think it is much more difficult to defeat an incumbent, especially now in this partisan time, than we realized.  Ohio and Iowa are lost. Michigan and Wisconsin and Pennsylvania may be pretty close for some time going forward. Wisconsin is the most vulnerable of the three states.

and

We did poorly down ballot because (1) Trump was on the ballot and (2) incumbents have a serious advantage and (3) mostly it was in red states and (4) even republicans or conservative independents who voted for Biden still voted for the Trump enabling republican senators despite the fact that they voted against Trump . Perhaps they convinced themselves that these people used to not be quite as awful before Trump and when Trump is gone, then they will be better. However, the reality is that these people have sold their souls. They won’t be or do better. And they need Trump’s voters. This is at least part of why more of them did not speak out after Biden won. We could add a (5) the system is antidemocratic , against the will of the people.

and

The real elitists were the Alexander Hamilton and other framers who created this anti-majoritarian system. The Supreme Court plays a huge role. Yet, justices aren’t voted on by the people, they aren’t picked only by a president who won a majority of the popular vote, they aren’t picked only by a president who only won a plurality of the majority of the vote, and they aren’t confirmed by a representative body but rather by the US Senate. The president doesn’t have to win a majority of the popular vote or even a plurality of the popular vote. The number of US Senators a state has doesn’t depend upon its population. There are two US senators from Wyoming with five people, two chickens and one dog and two US senators from California with forty million people, 40,000,000 people. The Democratic Party must win the popular vote by 7 or 8 percent to have control of the US House of Representatives typically due to gerrymandering.

Trump specific

Trump did win 75 million votes. Not due to talent, but simply due to being evil, Trump attracts bigoted voters like nobody we have ever seen on their side, even better than Reagan. He is a prodigious bigot vote-getter.

Campaigning

There is a massive disinformation campaign and his voters have insulated themselves from truth. Florida is susceptible to a message that identifies Democrats as socialists as stupid and as much bullshit as it is.  Violence and aggression appeal to young men of every ethnicity and so they are vulnerable to a maniac like Trump. Trump voters believe bullshit. It’s amazing. Religion is just a smokescreen for white culture for these people and that’s why it has nothing to do with morality.

Polling

Polling is screwed when Trump is on the ballot and not great when he is not on the ballot. There need to be alternate questions to get Trump voters to respond.

Encouraging

Texas was closer (less than 6% loss). I do think that many Trump voters will fail to vote or show up when Trump is not on the ticket and that they are angry at their republican governors and republican US Senators whom they feel didn’t stick up for Trump enough.  Without Trump, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania probably aren’t as close. These are the last breaths of an aging white population that is afraid of the present and the future where they are a minority of people and eventually a minority of voters.  They are afraid of white people not having the dominant culture and the dominant position in every aspect of society. Joe Biden won probably 82 million votes by the time the counting is done, 17 million more votes than Hillary Clinton only four years ago.   Joe Biden won the greatest percentage of the vote against an incumbent since 1932; Reagan only won 50.7% of the vote against the incumbent President Carter in 1980. Joe Biden won the popular vote by more than six million votes .  The Democratic candidate for president has won the popular vote in seven of the last eight presidential elections. We saw Arizona and Georgia both go blue. They had been trending blue. This, therefore, is not like Indiana in 2008. This is real. That doesn't mean that they are safe; they are far from safe. However, we can win them with the right circumstances if everything goes well and we do a great job getting out the vote.
