Social Justice Warriors, a term coined by typically baby boomers now for those who post on social media about political issues. While this term usually isn’t said in a positive connotation, it’s something to be said about the new generation using the new technology provided quickly.

The internet has given a new way to learn and interact with others. Many have embraced this and now people are honing their skills on the internet to make a change. In recent weeks, we’ve seen a flood of what boomers would call “social justice warriors” supporting the Black Lives Matter movement on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. While many think social media should be a place for family updates and cute cat videos, the new generation has stepped in to say that it should a place of education and advocacy.

I can say that I completely agree. Social media wasn’t built to be a frenzy of links to petitions, but it’s grown to be just that. My time with the Borgen Project has taught me that social media doesn’t just have to be where you post cute photos of your dog; it can your battleground to fight for causes around the world from your couch. In the past few weeks, I’ve emailed and called Congress countless times in support of numerous bills and even met with Senator Josh Hawley’s office via Zoom.

Who knew the setting political change could be from your bedroom? Today you can email or call Congress, sign multiple petitions, and spread awareness all before you’ve brushed your teeth. I’m thankful for the Borgen Project for opening eyes to so many more opportunities to enact change in my community in the world, and I implore to join us on this journey.

By simply going to https://borgenproject.org/action-center/ you can find many bills to advocate for. After filling in your information, you’ll be matched with your senators and representatives and presented a pre-filled email in which you can send or print and send in the mail. The process is quick and can take as little as two minutes.

So for all my social justice warriors, use this name a badge of honor for change in the world. Don’t let anyone make you underestimate the power that social media holds. Keep fighting and keep posting my friends, the war isn’t over.
